Jevišovice

History of Jevišovice

The landscape around the small town Jevisovice was inhabited already in prehistoric times. Archaeologists Jaroslav Palliardi and Francis Vildomec found here the remains of a prehistoric fort and the findings were of such importance that this culture was named after the site location - Jevišovická culture. The first mention of Jevišovice comes from the year 1289, when Boček from Kunštát was recalled as the owner. It belonged to this family for more than three centuries. There was built a castle at the end of 13th century on the fort site. Kunštát Hynek was its best-known holder, who became famous as a successful and courageous defender of Znojmo against Hungarians and Austrians, however he was a terror to the region for his ferocity and robber character that he was later described by Frantisek Vaclav Peřinka in the Moravian Geography "Hynek from Kunštát and in Jevišovice called Dry Devil was legendary violator of land peace and the most dangerous robber at his time”.

Jevišovice became one of the bastions of the Hussite movement in southwestern Moravia. This part of history of Jevišovice is commemorated by a memorial on the Žalov hill.

After the old castle being captured and demolished, the Kunštát dynasty built a new castle on the opposite headland, which Louis de Raduit Souches won for his merits in defending Brno against the Swedes in the 1645. It is said that a secret love of Prokop Diviš lived in the "Old Castle".

After 1736 Jevišovice and the adjacent property descended to the Ugart family. They ruled here 161 years. In 1898 the Jevišovice manor was bought by a Viennese banker Biedermann, in 1916 by a Viennese industrialist William Offenheim (he also built the historic building “Komenium” which is part of the Elementary School of Jevišovice) and in 1932 by Larisch-Mönnich.

At the time of the national freedom struggle Jevišovice led the struggle against germanised Znojmo. As the protest against germanism there was organized a massive camp of the people (16 thousand citizens of Znojmo) in Jevišovice in September 1871 led by the notary John Wolf, where the song "Kde domov můj” was sung for the first time in Znojmo area.

Before the end of the First World War Jevišovice signed up as the first town to the national oath, expressing the demand for freedom, expressed on 13 April 1918 by Alois Jirasek.

In 1990 the historical center of Jevišovice was declared an town monumental area.

The so-called 'New Castle' built in the late 17th century shines like a beautiful pearl in the sun. Its neighbourhood is still decorated with beautiful sculptures from Mattielli from liquidated monastery in Louka near Znojmo.

There was built a stone dam on the Jevišovka river in 1897 which was the first dam in Moravia at that time. The building's engineers were called up from Italy.
